Q: What is concrete?

A: Concrete is a mix of ingredients, including pozzolans, Portland cement, water, fine aggregates, coarse aggregates, and additives. Concrete may also contain granulated blast-furnace slag, mineral colors, and blended cement. When fresh, cement can be molded hours after it’s produced. Once the initial set time is reached, it will continue to gain strength.

Q: Why is concrete gray?

A: First of all, concrete can be colored in many colors. The natural color is gray. The reason for it has to do with the manufacturing of Portland Cement.

Q: How is the strength of concrete measured?

A: Scientists use flexural and compression mechanical strength tests to determine the strength of the concrete. It widely depends on the quality of aggregates and pastes in the cement, as well as the water-cement ratio.

Q: Are there any quality standards for concrete?

A: Yes, the concrete mix must comply with local building codes, ASTM, and ACI.

Q: What is the difference between concrete and cement?

A: It’s quite simple. Concrete is used for finished products such as foundations, sidewalks, and the surfaces of roads. Concrete contains gravel, sand, and cement. Cement is the special ingredient that makes concrete harden. It’s made of 60% limestone, 25% silica, 5% alumina, and 10% of other materials such as iron oxide and gypsum.

Q: Does concrete gain strength when it dries?

A: No. Concrete is made of aggregates, cement, and water together. When water comes in contact with the cement, there is a chemical reaction that is involved. It’s called hydration. It’s the reaction between the chemicals in cement and water. Such creation forms new crystals and compounds interlocking themselves and the aggregates together. Most of it takes place over the first month after installing the concrete. Small amounts of additional strength and reaction gains could take place over several years.
